Why I’ve Oil Cleansed for 6 Years—and What You Should Know
For the last six years, I’ve washed my face with oil. No foaming cleansers, no astringents, no drying scrubs—just simple, nourishing oils. And honestly? My skin has never been happier.
At first, it sounds counterintuitive. Use oil to cleanse your skin? But when you understand how oil cleansing works—and why it’s actually one of the most skin-supportive ways to wash your face—it starts to make perfect sense.
And soon, I’ll be sharing the exact oil blend I’ve come to love the most. (More on that in a minute.)
What Is Oil Cleansing?
Oil cleansing is a natural method of washing your face using oils instead of traditional soap-based cleansers. It gently removes:
- Makeup
- Sunscreen
- Dirt and grime
- Excess sebum —all without disrupting your skin’s natural barrier.
From a chemistry standpoint (chemistry teacher and nerd here 😄), like dissolves like—nonpolar oils are uniquely suited to dissolve the excess sebum, makeup, and oil-based grime on your skin. When you massage nourishing oils into your face and gently wipe them away with a warm cloth, you’re using solubility principles to lift impurities while preserving your skin’s protective barrier.
Why I Switched to Oil Cleansing
Like many people, I used to believe that squeaky-clean meant healthy skin. But the more I stripped away oils with foaming cleansers and astringents, the more reactive and dry my skin became. After I had my second son and began to notice more signs of aging, I knew my skin needed something different.
Since switching to oil cleansing:
- My skin stays balanced year-round
- Breakouts have become rare and less severe
- My moisture barrier feels protected, not stripped
- Makeup removal is easier, gentler, and faster
It’s become more than just a skincare step—it’s a moment of calm at the end of every day.
Who Is Oil Cleansing For?
The short answer: almost everyone. From dry to combination and even oily skin types, oil cleansing can be tailored to support your unique needs. It’s especially helpful if you:
- Struggle with dry or flaky skin
- React to conventional cleansers
- Want a gentle, nourishing alternative to harsh face washes
- Prefer simple, natural ingredients over lab-made formulas
A Hint of What’s Coming…
While our tallow balm can be used as an oil cleanser, it’s always felt a bit too heavy for me. I’ve tried many oil cleansers on the market and never found one with the perfect moisturizing-but-light feel.
After years of refining the oils I use—and encouraging friends and customers to try oil cleansing—I finally decided to create a blend of my own. I’ve been using the formula for months and am so happy to finally have an oil cleanser I’d recommend to anyone.
It’s called Golden Hour, and it’s coming soon.
If you’ve been curious about oil cleansing, now’s the perfect time to learn more, give it a try, and stay tuned. You’re going to love what’s on the way.
